Why it's Important to use Australian Web Hosting?
Luminous Hosting provisions it's web hosting using Australian Servers located in the Fujitsu data-centre, Melbourne. We specialise in catering to the increasing demand for speed, reliability and customer support only a business based in the same time zone can offer. This close proximity eleviates time consuming trans-continental delay both in terms of support downtime and data travel most common to budget hosting providers using US-provisioned servers. This "delay" will often add seconds onto each and every page load for a local (within the continent) customer browsing your web site.
Ping times are a good indicator of speed
Many web site owners are not aware this delay is due to the many interactions that occur between your web browser and the web server many times a second. This speed of this interaction is commonly measured by performing a data "ping". A ping will detail the amount of delay a single peice of data incurs when making a round trip from the web browser (the user) to the web server (the website) and back.
Within Australia we often see web server ping times around 22 to 40 milliseconds, depending on your location and the number of router or switching points your internet access passes through. In contrast to this, web sites hosted in two of the largest data centres in Texas and California, USA, I have never seen a ping time returned in under 200 milliseconds! Most hovering around the 240 to 320 mark...
But keep in mind this figure is only a small part of the overall server speed issue here...
Slow page loads do add up to big problems
If you are included in the majority of web sites owners today, you will most likely have a Content Managed System (CMS) running your web site. The most lightweight CMS will typically make a minimum of 10 "data calls" from the web server in the process of rendering the page for you. Now if we do the math; that's 250ms x 10 data calls = 2.5 seconds, Per page! In addition, we still need to factor in the time it takes to retrieve the blocks (packets) of data...
Here's a common scenario:
A potential customer is browsing your site. Your customer has visited 5 pages so far and becomes a little irritated with the time each page is taking to render onto the screen. Even if we factored in a conservative page delay estimate of only 3 seconds, that's 3 seconds x 5 pages = 15 seconds!
In the initial browsing stages, your prospect may have been very interested in your web site service or product, but with this length of page render delay, sooner or later your customer is going to realise there are other businesses around who offer the same service as you but with faster web site access. So really the answer here becomes very obvious... What would you do if this was you? Yes that's right; you'd find another business with a faster web site too, and we all do when given the choice!
Your customers nearly always take the easy route
It's important to realise that all customers will take the path of least resistance. If they have a choice between a staying on a slow site or finding an alternate and faster loading site, users will nearly always opt to cancel the slow session and begin searching for another business.
When you consider the average viewer makes a decision whether to stay or leave a web site in 5 seconds or less, it has never been more important to focus on giving your customers the speed and convenience they need. Convince them your site is worthy of their time, and they will thank you for it by giving you their business.
Do you still think you can afford to use off-shore web hosting? I believe there is no higher priority for an Australian based small business...
